New Home Educating parents may be inclined to sign up for all sorts of online courses and even online schools in the first few months of their journey.  However, the advice given by the majority of experienced home educators is: don’t. Take a few months of unschooling, allow your child to find out what they enjoy and don’t financially commit to anything that you may discover wasn’t necessary. When you are ready to start using some resources, make sure you check out these excellent free ones first….the top one has got my son through to iGCSE Maths and didn’t cost a penny!

We’ve compiled a list of the best completely free online math resources perfect for home educating families. These sites offer interactive activities, tutorials, and practice materials suitable for a range of ages and abilities.

1. Cognito Edu

Placing this at number 1 as I personally recommend this to EVERYONE who has a child working towards iGCSEs. Their online learning platform is designed to support students through their secondary education journey and offers a robust, multi-faceted approach to exam preparation.

2. BBC Bitesize Maths

Easily number 2 as both my children started here before moving on to Cognitoedu. BBC Bitesize offers clear explanations of math concepts aligned with the UK curriculum. 3. Khan Academy

At number 3 is another personal recommendation that both my children used, alongside BBC Bitesize. Khan Academy offers comprehensive math lessons through engaging videos and interactive practice exercises. The platform adapts to each learner’s level and provides immediate feedback. Perfect for structured learning with clear progression paths from basic counting to advanced calculus. It is aligned to US curriculum so the grade structure can be a little confusing for UK home educators.

4. Corbettmaths

Not one I’ve personally experienced, but I’ve heard good things from others in the community. Created by UK math teacher John Corbett, this site offers videos, worksheets, practice questions, and “5-a-day” exercises. Particularly strong for GCSE preparation, it includes exam-style questions with worked solutions.

5. Nrich Maths

“Hit the Button” is the favourite game for my 2, but TopMarks hosts a collection of interactive math games and activities that work on tablets and computers. Their “Daily 10” activities are particularly popular for building number fluency and mental math skills.
